Honours in PhysicsResearch in Physics is internationally recognized for its excellence. Staff members collaborate with a wide variety of national and international universities and cutting-edge international projects. Research projects range from fundamental studies of the structure of sub-atomic matter, to the development of novel optical and photonic systems for a wide range of applications, to medical physics and geophysics, to the investigation of the atmosphere using a network of sites that stretches from the equator to the Antarctic, to the investigation of the structure of the universe and extreme astrophysics. Fourth year programs leading to a B.Sc. with Honours are available in experimental, theoretical and mathematical physics. The whole year is spent studying physics and a research project forms an important part of the course. Third year students intending to study for Honours should discuss their plans with the Physics Honours Co-ordinator during the year and take care in their choice of courses. Honours may be taken with an experimental, theoretical or computational project, in addition to lecture courses. The year is looked on as enjoyable but competitive, because the number of scholarships for postgraduate work is limited. Research projects are chosen at the start of the Honours year and are undertaken in one of the research groups operating in the Discipline of Physics.
